The term ‘child marriage’ must be understood in its proper perspectives as the two words are quite contradictory. Marriage is a formalized relationship with legal standing between an individual man and woman, in which sexual relations are legitimized. Obviously, one would expect such a relationship between two consenting adults. The question is how can a child be a party to a marriage, when she is unable to understand the nature and consequences of marriage? It can certainly be attributed to a patriarchal structure of society. In underdeveloped society there exists an extensive regional, cultural and religious variation concerning specific aspects of patriarchy. There are many reasons of child marriage; institutions of patriarchy, control over sexuality, malleability, economic reasons, lack of alternatives, lack of awareness about adverse health consequences, lack of legal awareness and political commitments are few. MASUM is studying the child marriage situation at Indo Bangladesh bordering area and try to reason the continuous violence and presence of bordering guards with the increasing number of child marriage at Murshidabad district. In an attempt to improve border security and halt the tide of illegal trade that sometimes includes narcotics and weapons, the Indian government beefed up the BSF presence along the Bangladeshi border. BSF personnel have no respect for basic human rights. They routinely make a mockery out of the right to life, the right to free movement and the right to due process. Women in the bordering areas live in abject fear of BSF jawans and constantly face the threat of rape and sexual abuse. Apart from the extreme subjugation they are facing voyeurism, verbal abuses with sexual connotation and misconducts. In this contextual reality, the initiative is trying to convincingly prove the reality that the incidents of child marriage at Indo- Bangladesh bordering areas of Murshidabad district has direct impact of violence and presence of Border Security Force personnel and non- deliverance. The Initiative is addressing the issue with a participatory planning with populace by increasing awareness and peer group formation and legal initiatives.
